While in counseling, I shared a story about being half asleep. My therapist called the experience, “hypnagogia” — the transitional state between sleep and waking life.
There’s no word to describe the space between our perception of something and its reality. But, I felt like this word was the closest thing. Perceptions are not too unlike dreams. In that, although they can feel vivid and real, they aren’t perfect reflections of what is true.
In this piece, the videos of my clothed self serve as a metaphor for how others perceive me, while my bare body symbolizes who I really am. I wanted to create an experience where people can physically walk through while contemplating that space between.
